MATSURFERS.COM NEWS - December 2020

HO HO HO MATTERS!!!

Welcome to our December 2020 newsletter and something of a boon of a month with a viral mat video (with an extra wave), the latest FringsSurfer.tv episode, the launch or our updated Care & Repair page and a long awaited Here & Now from Kendog featuring legendary surf/skate photographer, lance Smith.

Enjoy and have a fantastic festive period!

HERE & NOW - LANCE SMITH

We are very proud to present this huge piece from our boy, Kendog. This, the latest edition of Ken’s Here & Now Series features a true San Diegan legend. Lance Smith is a hugely talented and respected photographer who has contributed hugely to the Surfmat zeitgeist over the years, alongside his phenomenal skate and surfing photography.

SURFMAT CARE AND REPAIR

Long over due but in fairness this has been an ongoing project for some time. We are please to formally unveil our updated care and repair page HERE.

We’ve got videos in there now which definitley make like easier. There is still a need for a video for large tears so if anyone does do this repair at any point, please do record it and get in touch.

THE INTRICACIES OF MAT SURFING (IN A NUTSHELL)

If you haven’t yet got on the FringeSurfer.TV train then you need to get yourself a ticket! In the final issue of Season 1, film maker and mat surfer Tim Ciasto presents mat builder, Graeme Webster of G-Mat Surfmats.

You can read all about the 4 year project that was the making of this film and give FringeSurfer.TV a follow on Instagram HERE.

Check out the FringeSurfer.TV site for all the other info, etc HERE.

VIDEO OF THE MONTH

Well here it is. That video posted on Instagram by LOGRAP. Over 30k hits on a mat clip is pretty good going and it seems to be another one of those moments where the wider surfing world get shaken from their eye-on-the-road journey and say “WTF is that?!”.

This is really good for matsurfing. Particularly when the mat riding on show in a viral video is from a true master of the art rather than from a pro surfer having a few waves on a mat (that is not to disrespect those who have taken the time to learn how to ride mats well).

Anyway, LOGRAP have been kind enough to send us the footage with a second wave wave which is actually better! Sit back and enjoy the lesson from Andrew Stephen Buck.

As always, we welcome your feedback and contributions. Have a fantastic fetive period Matters, whatever your inclination. 2020 has been a really fricken weird year but the waves keep coming so just keep flying and keep safe.

Happy 2021!

Thanks

MAT CARE AND REPAIR

We are currently working on updating our Care and Repair page which is a marathon not a sprint for sure but with thought you might like to look at some videos that will be in there which have been done for the site by G from G-Mat Surfmats.

PHOTO OF THE MONTH

And finally, our Pic of the Month(s) is by our very on Kendog. A beautiful shot of the lat, great Scott Reeder.

Many of you will not know of Scott but he was one of the true legends of our world. A phenomenon in the SD surfing world, Festus Porkmeyer (as he was known) was one of the most loved and respected individuals you could imagine.

Have a look at his hugely inspirational Here and Now interview with Kendog back in 2014:

https://www.matsurfers.com/scott-reeder

Scott also played host to Phileas, the travelling mat

His write ups were amazingas you can see here:

https://customsurfmats.com/phileas/tag/Scott+Reeder

Scott unfortunately lost his battle with cancer but rode his mat right up to the very end. The Mat World is a better place for having had Scott in it that’s for sure.

Here’s to you Festus!

So that’s us. We’ll try to be less slack next time.

As always, we welcome your feedback and contributions.

Thanks
