MATSURFERS.COM NEWS - APRIL 2020

April 22, 2020 by Admin

So as the crziness continues we bring you our April Newsletter… We’re not going to say anything on covid-19 other than people know that there is a highly contageous virus about and moving transmits it.

So back to this and we have a fantastic interview by Jamie McClellan with Yucca Fins founder, Sean Starkey, news of a bit of a renaming of an old fave, new stock in our store and much more… Enjoy!

THE QUARANTINE CHRONICLES

Untitled_Artwork.jpg

Our roving reporter Jamie McClellan has been hard at work getting in touch witrh the great and the good from the surfmat world for a series of interviews to keep us all stoked during what is, by anyone’s standards, a really odd time.

We are SUPER proud to kick off with an interview with the Wedge legend that is Sean Starkey of Yucca Fins.

A picture paints a thousand words…

G-Mat AirPlane

What’s more, the G-Mat AirPlane is now in stock in our store HERE

MORE MEANDERINGS FROM PRANAGLIDER

If you don’t know Bruce Cowan (AKA Pranaglider) then you probably don’t really ride a mat. I you do ride a mat, then here is more from Bruce.

First off, Just Beyond our Event Horizon:

And next, The Art of Capturing Light and Subtlety:

There you go. Life just got better and we all just got smarter.

Thanks as always Bruce!

VIDEO OF THE MONTH

This month’s video/photo of the month is more from Sean Starkey. This video is a fascinating insite in to the technical side of swim fins and, in particular, a look at generic molds. You really do get what you pay for!

There has been a lot of confusion around the cost of fins. Why some fins cost more then others. I’ve found it very surprising that more people are unaware of generic fin molds. In this episode I discuss and explain generic fin molds, how a consumer can spot a generic fin and why these fins from generic molds can be sold cheaper then fins designed from the ground up like #yuccafins

So there we go. As always, we welcome your feedback and contributions.

We hope you are all staying safe.

Thanks

MATSURFERS.COM NEWS - APRIL 2019

April 28, 2019 by Admin

Welcome to the April 2019 MatSurfers.com Newsletter. We have a lot in this month with a new Here & Now, an update on the 'Surfmat Rage debacle and news about a stock mat from Warpmats, plus a great video from Trevor Gordon riding a G-Mat Bodybag at Sandspit.

Oh… and a Matmeet!

JJ’s HERE & NOW

We are so proud to present the latest Here & Now instalment from Kendog.

JJ.jpg

This one has taken a lot of work to put together. Field work from Ken and then Jamie slogging through the tons of material to put it all together but what a final result, were sure you’ll agree. Reed all about it HERE.

SURFMAT RAGE UPDATE

Not the nicest of subjects this one but needs reporting on. Mark Thomson has been in court. The article speaks for itself so we don’t have anything to say on it. You can read it HERE.

We’ll have to see how this all pans out. What we would say though is keep it mellow out there. A scene as small as ours is susceptible to being tarred with brushes and some of the comments online seem to really focus on the mat element. Mat riders are generally seen as low key, relaxed, no bullsh*t individuals. Let’s keep it that way.

SOCAL MATMEET

G from G-Mat Surfmats recently took a trip to California and, whilst there, put up the Mat Signal for a matmeet. It was held at Cottons and was well attended by some old and new faces. The waves weren’t great, but as you’d expect, the fun was world class!

Chad Stickney of HCW Housings was there with his camera and drone. He’s working on an edit right now which we’ll stick in the next news letter. For now, here are a few GoPro clips taken by Matt Pierce of a session he had at a rare spot with James “Mattitude” Sowell and G.

WARPMATS STOCK MODEL

News from Warpmats. They are back in action and have brought out a stock mat called the GP.

WM.png

This has a big size range in terms of rider and suits most conditions as you’d expect for all rounders. Have a read about them and get yours on the Warpmats site HERE.

PHOTO OF THE MONTH

Well… We’ve gone for a video this time. Technically broken our own rules but this clip from Trevor Gordon surfing Sandspit with a G-Mat Bodybag is waaaaaaaay too good not to share!
